Mediate Your Life – Heartland NVC Mediation Immersion Program

This program began to change my life while I was at my first intensive and continues enhancing my life in so many ways.  To name a few of the benefits I continue to notice in my life; I am able to navigate conflict with others in a way that I never thought was possible, my capacity for maintaining a calm presence within myself while in the midst of conflict continues to grow, my sense of self and of being grounded stimulates such confidence for me, I am able to offer my skills to others in conflict and the list continues.

This program is the first to fulfill John Kinyon and Ike Lasater’s goal of others leading immersion programs.  John and Ike are co-founders of NVC Mediation.  I found so much value in this program that I wanted to share it with as many people as I possible.

The Heartland Program (at Unity Village) will begin its third year May of 2012.  What begins as a program, forms into a community of individuals supporting each other sometimes beyond the year. You will learn how to mediate or navigate your life, and skills and tools that will support you to reach your goals and meet your needs.

In the First Intensive you will learn some of the skills and tools to facilitate a mediation between two other individuals, as well as having the opportunity to use the mediation process as a personal growth tool for working through your own conflict situations.

  • The nine skills
  • The five-step mediation model
  • Self-connection practice
  • Intensity exercise
  • Elements of Empathy
  • Need Behind the No process

Our yearlong Immersion Program comprises three multi-day intensives spaced over 9 to 12 months, plus a commitment to learning and practice activities between the intensives:

  • Daily individual self-connection and skill-building practices (details below)
  • Weekly dyad and triad practice with fellow participants (details below)
  • Monthly joint teleconference sessions extending one month after the third intensive to support next steps and integration of the training into your life
  • Support from trainers during and between intensives
  • Additional support for returning students

Daily self-connection: We model several approaches, although you may well find your own method of connecting with yourself on a daily basis. Whatever your approach, we’ve learned that it’s best to incorporate the four NVC components of observations, feelings, needs, and requests, and to have a daily reminder of these that helps you carry them with you.

Weekly dyad practice: This is an hour-long practice processes and skills from the training with one other person. You will receive support and also gain the skills and capacity to support someone else.

Weekly triad practice: This is an hour-and-a-half practice, in a group of three or possibly four. Each person generally gets around 12 to 20 minutes in the mediator’s chair. You’ll have opportunities to rotate your own conflict through the chairs, taking on each vantage point.

Trainers:  Lori Woodley & John Kinyon
